Sina Weibo; Analyzing the Top 10 Brands on China’s Twitter.

    Apr 27, 2011

So we’ve been running a number of campaigns across Sina Weibo for a variety of clients; doing so requires us to be somewhat knowledgeable of how to strategize, plan, and optimize Weibo for brands.

Now while this sort of thing is regularly covered in our company blog, I figured I’d post it here partly for those of you unfamiliar with that resource, and partly to knock off the rust built round my fingers from months spent not blogging. That’s what I like to call a “win-win”.

The Darkness Driving China Social Media.

Ah yes, “Social Media”, I surf around the web reading about it, I create strategies for it, I see and hear about it all day. There are two things that will happen once you overdose on the social media services gold rush; one is you mindlessly follow everybody else’s tactics, leading to copy/paste social media marketing; the other, you dive deeper to figure out what “social media” really is beyond potentially cheap(er) advertising and its most visible keywords “tribes”, “communities”, “connection”, “engagement”.

    1. David Wolf: Really superb article, Rand. Thank you.

      • Rand: Thanks for the compliment David :)

    2. Archie: Nice work Rand. You've gotta love those late night "creative bursts". Honest and forthright and occasionally scary :-)

      • Rand: thx archie - ya late night is the best time to write; though the morning requires a thorough clean up.

    3. Graham Norris: Looking forward to you spilling the rest of the beans. I wonder if the Mengniu-Yili fallout will actually put people…

      • Rand: One would hope so, but probably not; what will stop agencies is the inevitable diminishing returns of this tactic; while…

    4. Charlie Wang: Dude! Insightful as always! BTW, love the social media BS generator. I personally use this one for all my IT…

      • Rand: Cheers Charlie :)

China’s uber-famous blogger Han Han is going the way of Jay Chou; we see him sponsoring a wide assortment of products, though with a more introspective edge compared to singer Jay Chou’s wide spread magnetism.

We covered this in a previous post, though lightly; so today instead of writing anything semi-intelligent, I’m going to let my decaffeinated brain do the posting. If I’m lucky I may be able to pop a few insights before I finish writing this post, if not.. well there’s some funny pictures worth a scan and a quick laugh so we still all win.. sorta.

Based on my general experience of China advertising and social media, I’ve really come to admire Vancl’s advertising strategy.

The focus isn’t broad stroked Chinese cliche; or a usage of celebrities commonly seen promoting a myriad of products (like when you see famous Taiwan singer Jay Chou promote a fast food chain, a clothing line, a soft drink all in the same commercial break).

Picked this up via Han Jun Wei and Buzzandthecity; it’s a funny look at Chinese women’s dating options in China. Beyond the beauty of the photos, there’s also some sharp commentary on Chinese culture as well.
