IBM; Geeky Love via China Viral.

I found this one on LRB’s forums. It’s a pretty simple video with a surprise ending; surprising enough to get 3.5 million views, and close to 1,000 comments. Created for the IBM Rational Software Conference this geeky romantic viral hit the mark.
It’s interesting what goes viral in China vs. the West. There’s a sweet innocence to the Chinese psyche, [...]

Thumbnail image for Jinkela; Purposefully idiotic China ad creates massive viral success.

I found this on LRB’s forum; it’s an ad for Jinkela, some sort of fertilizer. What’s crazy is the clownish way they went to advertise it; and the surprising reaction from millions of Chinese viewers.
Here’s an interesting question; let’s say you are an unrecognized brand, and you want to go “viral” to spread the word as quickly as [...]

Breaking Down Viral Advertising.

11.27.2009 Insights

Hey all; I’m still in process of rebuilding ZeroDegree’s site; here’s something I wrote yesterday for ZD; it’s a general theory of viral advertising.
Key points are breaking it down to a level wherein we can predict results. This is always limited to content; but having said that there are other ways to build some [...]

When talking about office life, perhaps the only couple of items that come into your mind are desktop/laptop, sticky-notes, pen and the forever handicapped printer… How to enjoy working? I’ve seen advertisers encouraged white collars to yogurt-dance, to steal Lay’s, to play basketball for distraction. Or, we can simply work and just enjoy it.
The office [...]

Nokia; Transformers + Michael Jackson Viral.

09.23.2009 Nokia
Thumbnail image for Nokia; Transformers + Michael Jackson Viral.

Here’s a pretty cool ad; it takes advantage of current pop trends to weave together a simple engaging experience.
A key element to note is that both the Transformers & Michael Jackson elements are western in origin, yet either separate or together, they have a big emotional impact on the average Nokia-targeted Chinese.
I like this ad; [...]

Canon; Virals mock original ad for additional 10 million online views.

06.18.2009 Canon

This cannon ad featured above is OK, it features famous Hong Kong movie star Karen Mok, and shows people dancing next to a spinning digital camera (*yawn*).
What makes this ad interesting is not the original super-slick production verison, but the many viral offshoots found on the web, beginning with a person dressed as a pink cow [...]

LiNing; New Badminton Viral Video. Kinda cool… but not really.

05.28.2009 LiNing

This is LiNing’s latest Vial Video – as reported by Youku Buzz. Kinda cool… until you see Nokia’s Bruce Lee virals. Bruce Lee is a hard act to follow (nunchucks being inherently more cool than badminton) – especially when considering LiNing’s video features a sport where the “ball” has it’s own parachute.

Nokia & Intel; Chinese Viral Videos.

05.05.2009 Intel

Big brands are taking advantage of viral videos to economically spread the word; and push the “cool” modern brand image. This is a refreshing approach to the traditional visual pitch; here’s a few samples from Nokia and Intel:

Nokia used amazing Taiwanese magician Liu Qian’s magic act to cause a viral sensation in China. Mixing his [...]
