Hey all, this is a collection of some cool sand paintings I found on LRB forums, here and here. My guess is that a lot of you have already seen this stuff, so rather than focus on the art of sand painting, instead I’ll focus on sheer number of aggregated videos with sand painting in them.
Why am I posting these videos? Well number one I was sitting at home and saw an Audi commercial using sand painting as the creative, and it got me to pondering the evolution of sand painting, from simple “hey look at me painting in sand!” to “hey look at me painting in sand… now pay me 200k RMB.”
You may have noticed a cynicism in that last sentence; a deeply rooted dark cloud that not even the strongest Starbucks quadruple non-fat latte can exorcise. I certainly don’t mean to be cynical but then…
Oh f*ck it – here are the videos.
Audi commercial currently playing on China TV. Great mix of “sand” environments along with Audi’s product.
Doncafe ad using sand; this one fits a bit better as the sand looks like coffee; the product is easily integrated into the creative.
Youdao search engine uses sand painting. I’ve never heard of Youdao search, and the reason may be because the sand artist misspells the name twice; in the beginning spelling it Yodao and at the end Youda.
Baidu uses sand painting for its 10th anniversary.
Beijing Olympic Games sand painting.
A video discovered on renren.com a while back; performed for Western audiences; this one isn’t advertising themed; rather it tells a story of a woman growing up and surviving WWII.
And here is where it began, Su Tai Po, the originator and most influential sand painter. His content targets Chinese paintings and traditional culture.

Great post. I’m embarrassed to say that examples of sand painting (we use a Lenovo one that you left off) have been used in social media trainings we’ve given.
no worries, if you’re doing social media trainings we should meet up at some point and exchange notes – shoot me an email: rand.han@resonancechina.com
